Longways Sideways Mittens



Sideways Mittens - The Long Way Version by Mariella Apodaca 2006

Needles to give Gauge - I’m a loose knitter, so I use #5’s

Gauge: 4-4.5 sts = 1 inch with Worsted Wt Yarn

CO 28 (32), place marker, CO 28 (32) more.

Rows & Ridges

1. K 56 (64) across, slipping marker (Ridge 1)

2. K across inc before and after marker 58 (66) sts

3. Knit across all sts slipping marker (Ridge 2)

4. K across inc before and after marker 60 (68) sts

5. Knit across all sts slipping marker (Ridge 3)

6. K across inc before and after marker 62 (70) sts

7. Knit across all sts slipping marker (Ridge 4)

8. K across inc before and after marker 64 (72) sts

9. Knit across all sts slipping marker (Ridge 5)

10. Knit 55 (61), wrap next st, turn

11. K46 (50) , wrap next st , turn (Ridge 6)

12. Knit across, slipping marker and picking up wrapped sts

13. Knit across, slipping marker and picking up wrapped sts (Ridge 7)

14. Knit 55 (61), wrap next st, turn

15. K46 (50) , wrap next st , turn (Ridge 8)

16. Knit across, slipping marker and picking up wrapped sts

17. Repeat row 16, and at the same time dec before and after marker – 62 (70) sts (Ridge 9)

18. Knit across all sts slipping marker

19. K across dec before and after marker 60 (68) sts (Ridge 10)

20. Knit across all sts slipping marker

21. K across dec before and after marker 58 (66) sts (Ridge 11)

22. Knit across all sts slipping marker

23. K across dec before and after marker 56 (64) sts (Ridge 12)

24. BO 37 (45) sts

Begin Thumb

1. Place last st back on LH needle and CO 6 (8) sts on LH needle for thumb, K to end of row.

2. K across 25 (27)sts (Ridge 1)

3. Short rows: K 9 (11), wrap next st and turn (don't forget to pick up previous wrapped st)

4. K 9 (11) (Ridge 2)

5. K 11 (13) , wrap next st and turn

6. K 11 (13) (Ridge 3)

7. K 13 (15), wrap next st and turn

8. K 13 (15) , (Ridge 4)

9. Knit 16 (17), wrap next st and turn

10. K 16 (17) (Ridge 5)

11. K 13 (15), wrap next st and turn

12. K 13 (15) , (Ridge 6)

13. K 11 (13), wrap next st and turn

14. K 11 (13) (Ridge 7)

15. K 9 (11), wrap next st and turn

16. K 9 (11) (Ridge 8)

17. K across 25 (27) sts

18. Knit across 25 (27) sts (Ridge 9)

19. Bind off and seam up the sides and thumb. Here is how it should look with the thumb added on last.

Notes:

Feel free to work short rows any way you prefer. I used the traditional Short Row Wrap and Pick Up because that is what I know best. Just don't forget to pick up the wrapped sts on the way back!

If you don't want to work short rows, just omit them by knitting rows 9-16 in plain garter stitch. You won't have that "gathered in" look at the wrist, and they might be a little loose for smaller wrist sizes, but they are easier to work.

If you want to add on extra stitches for a longer cuff, place a marker before and after the extra stitches, and follow the directions using the original stitch counts, but starting from the markers. Here I added on 5 extras stitches at the beginning and end (the cuff parts).
