Half Circle Knit Shawl

I am finally getting around to posting some of my older creations/patterns.

Here is the Half Circle Knit Shawl I made in 2006

Made with Worsted Wt yarn

Gauge in garter stitch - 10 sts & 10 ridges/4”

Needles: Whatever gives gauge – I used #13’s because I knit loose

Cast On 5 sts and Knit 1 row

  1. K1, (m1, K1) 4x – 9 sts
  2. K 3 rows
  3. K2, (YO, K1) 6x, K1 - 15 sts
  4. K 7 rows
  5. K2, (YO, K1) 12x, K1 - 27 sts
  6. K 7 rows (4 ridges between YO increases)
  7. K2, YO, (K3, YO, K1, YO) 5x, K3, YO, K2
  8. K 7 rows

You are increasing every 8th row with YO’s - after and before the 2 edge stitches and the between segments; In other words the K3 will be K5, next inc round and then K7 and so on.

It helps to mark the K1 center stitch with a marker and keep moving it up as you go along.

*Optional - On the very last inc row, I threw in some K2tog, YO’s across the row.

I worked 67 garter stitch ridges before I started the borders.

Work the borders by picking up stitches along the sides and including first 5 sts at the neckline, all across and knit for about 6 rows or 3 garter stitch ridges.

Finished length with borders was 33”.

You could probably use any size needle and yarn that produces the weight and texture you prefer.

March 5, 2009 UPDATE

Some asked about adding another wedge for 7 wedges.

I think this might work but I have not tested it yet.

Cast On 5 sts and Knit 1 row

  1. Knit in front and back of every st across row – 10 sts
  2. K 3 rows
  3. K2, (YO, K1) 7x, K1 - 17 sts
  4. K 7 rows
  5. K2, (YO, K1) 14x, K1 - 31 sts
  6. K 7 rows (4 ridges between YO increases)
  7. K2, YO, (K3, YO, K1, YO) 6x, K3, YO, K2
  8. K 7 rows

I have not tried this out so let me know if it works!
